The stuffsack—a DACHSER in-house development, has a storage capacity of 80 litres and is made of fabric.

When the handling staff load the swap bodies or the semi-trailers for long-haul transport, they have to summon up the skills of a Tetris champion. The aim is to load as many goods as possible on the floor or in double-decker fashion whilst ensuring there are no gaps which could cause the goods to slide out of place. The dimensions, packaging, weight limits or arrival times of local transport vehicles often make the task more difficult than one would think. Luckily though there are practical tools to help make loading secure and safe.

Stuffsacks made by DACHSER

The stuffsack—a DACHSER in-house development, like the coated ratch too incidentally—has a storage capacity of 80 litres and is made of fabric that is usually used in flood control. It is filled with pieces of waste film that the DACHSER branches reuse to conserve resources. The sack can be poked and squeezed as required into place between the pallets to fill any empty spaces to make the load secure. The vertical clamp rod, on the other hand, extends “into the corner” and can be used to fill broad areas of the loading space if the goods take up less space than usual. Finally, the horizontal ratch prevents the pallets from moving towards the doors by themselves.

“The European DACHSER branches reorder around 40,000 stuffsacks every year and receive around 7,000 clamp rods and ratches,” Gottfried Schatz explains, who has central responsibility for load safety and packaging at DACHSER. “This alone shows the high priority afforded to the issue of load safety at DACHSER because professional load safety has a direct impact on quality.”

Load safety means quality assurance

The shipper’s responsibility to load goods so that they are safe for transportation is enshrined in law throughout the whole of Europe. DACHSER doesn’t just meet the official requirements but also takes care to ensure especially high quality in load safety to reduce transportation damage to an absolute minimum. That is why the majority of quality campaigns in the Business Lines European Logistics and Food Logistics also entail the purchase of new load safety equipment. There are also regular training sessions at the branches, sometimes organised by the company, sometimes with technical inspection organisations such as Dekra or TÜV.

This shows: DACHSER pays load security the high amount of attention it deserves. In combination with the right packaging—which the manufacturer and dispatcher are responsible for, and for which DACHSER provides consultancy services if needed—all the prerequisites for compliant and damage-free transportation are in place.
